All about Cleaning Windows

Published on Sunday, 25 November 2012

If you work at an office chances are the windows there are cleaned on a regular basis and usually look sparkling clean. Clean windows make a really good impression and look very presentable. Don't you wish that you could get the same effect at home with your own windows? It is quite a manageable task, because cleaning windows is one of the most common cleaning chores which anyone can do. It's true that it takes a little longer than dusting and even mopping the floors, but it is definitely worth the efforts. Not many people manage to clean the windows on a regular basis and usually they blame the lack of enough time.

However, having clean windows is not only about maintenance and care, but it's also about constant prevention. All the dirt and dust that you see entering your house from the windows and doors actually accumulates on your windows every day. As a result, they get stained, grey and unpleasant looking. Nobody likes dirty windows, but we tend to notice the dirt only when we are about to invite guests and then it looks like mission impossible to get everything sorted out and find time to wash the windows too. Washing the windows once every 3 or four months is definitely not the best way.

When it comes to cleaning the windows at home, the routine is quite straightforward. The first thing to do is to prepare the windows, especially on the outside. Use a soft brush to remove any loose grit, dirt and cobwebs. If you start with the damp cloth immediately, you will only spread the dirt further and cause even bigger stains. After you've dusted the windows from top to bottom, get a bucket of clean water, some clean dry cloths, a strong all-purpose cleaner or a glass spray. One of the key things to do is to change the water so you don't spread dirty water on the glass. Always start from top to bottom and apply some pressure to remove the stubborn stains and streaks. One of the ways to get sparkling clean windows is by using damp newspaper, although you need to be careful as the ink may smear on the window sill and the frame. If you have a good commercial glass cleaner, simply stick to it. Pay attention to the corners as that's where a lot of grit accumulates. You can wipe down the windows with some kitchen roll or a clean cloth. Try not to use too much water and always dry the area. Many people use paintbrushes to reach the corners of the frame and clean all the particles and dust. If the glass still looks sticky and greasy after all the rubbing and the product you've used, mix some white vinegar with cool water and pour the mixture in a spray bottle. This method usually gives great results. Remember that if you only wash your windows once every few months, it'll get harder and harder to get rid of the stains and all the dirt buildup. It's better to wash your windows on a cloudy day so the sun doesn't dry them out too quickly.

Take a look at your windows once every three-four weeks. If you spot stains and greasy areas, simply grab the glass spray and a clean cloth and wash them. It won't take you that long if you do it more often.
